SOTRA

ØYGARDEN

ASKØY

It is only a 15 - 20 minute car ride from the centre of Bergen to Sotra/Øygarden and Askøy, and in this short time, you move to an area that varies from the harsh living conditions of the fishermen farmers to the gigantic modern industrial petrochemical plants. The scenery is unique and varies from verdant oases to shiny rocks.

The region boasts a number of activities connected with fishing and the sea, and important historical events can be relived through visits to museums, including Herdla Museum, Nordsjøfartmuseet (the North Sea Maritime Museum) and Kystmuseet (The Coast Museum). And Askøy-grown strawberries are second to none.

GLESVÆR TRADING POST

Glesvær is one of the oldest trading posts on the coast of western Norway. During the 18th and 19th century it was one of the largest and most important fishing villages on Sotra island. During the herring fishing season Glesvær was a meeting point and up to 140 vessels could moor here at any one time. The developments in the fisheries and new routes mean that Glesvær is a far less central location than before. The trading post at Glesvær is, however, one of the few old trading posts that has survived all of the changes and that is still in operation as part of the historical network of trading posts and accommodation sites along the coast.
