SUNNHORDLAND

From the ocean to the mountains

In Sunnhordland, the wild ocean meets peaceful mountain plains, rocky shores and verdant agricultural districts, sheltered spots of paradise, glaciers of blue ice, and one of Norway’s mightiest waterfalls, hi-tech innovations and Stone Age, Iron Age, Bronze Age and Viking relics. Here you can ski on year-round snow, bathe in the sea, fish for trout in a river and pollack in the fjord – all in one day! From one thousand islands in the mouth of the ocean to Folgefonna, the jewel in the crown to the east of the region, it all makes Sunnhordland into a varied and challenging kingdom, where history, nature and heritage interplay. This is where large and small gems join to form a beautiful piece of jewellery. And this a jewellery box that you are heartily welcome to help yourself from!

THE BARONY

The only barony in Norway is located in Rosendal, Kvinnherad, and was built in the 1660s by the Danish nobleman, Ludvig Rosenkrantz. The barony includes the great house itself, built in the Renaissance style with baroque decoration, the Rose Garden, and the landscape Park, the Rosendal Stud, the Lady House and the tied cottage Træo.
The barony greets around 40,000 visitors each year. A programme of activities takes place at the great house during the year, including concerts in the Yellow Room, art exhibitions in the wine cellar, wool combing and spinning in the Borgstova, baking in the Old Kitchen, with the home-baked pastries being served in the Tea Lounge.
