LYSØEN WITH OLE BULL'S VILLA

This distinctive villa with its concert hall was built in 1872/73 by Ole Bull (1810-1880) as his summer residence and meeting place for his many friends and famous contemporaries in the fields of art and culture. The house and its contents and wealth of Ole Bull reminiscences has stood unchanged since his death at Lysøen in 1880. It is now preserved as a national monument. After Ole Bull’s death, Lysøen belonged to an unbroken line of his American descendants, who have preserved the house and surroundings with loving care and respect for tradition. In 1973, Ole Bull’s daughter’s daughter, Mrs. Sylvea Bull Curtis, of Connecticut, USA, donated the whole property and its contents to the Association for Preservation of Norwegian Monuments, dep. Bergen.
