NORDHORDLAND

The coastal gem between Bergen and the Sognefjord

It only takes around a half hour to get to Nordhordland from Bergen city centre. Driving, you cross the Nordhordland bridge – the longest floating bridge without side mooring in the world – and into a mix of coastal, fjord and mountain scenery that focuses around the coast. Fedje is a paradise for sea anglers, Lyngheiene – with its characteristic agricultural landscape of this region – now features its own experience centre that in July 2001 was awarded an UNESCO prize for safeguarding and management of the cultural landscape.

Fedje

Or "Feie" as the locals call it, is a small island community far to the west towards the North Sea. Norway’s westernmost municipality. More and more people have found out about this gem at the mouth of the ocean, with its exciting nature and traditions. Being on Fedje and drinking in the views of the mighty ocean is an experience in itself.

Lyngheisenteret

An information centre for the open coastal heather moors - a European cultural landscape on the edge of the Atlantic. Formed by the resource use of the coastal communities over thousands of years, but now threatened and in danger of disappearing.

In 2001, the Lyngheisenteret received the UNESCO prize for Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes. The centre was awarded the so-called Melina Mercouri prize for its work in the protection of the cultural landscape at Lygra in Hordaland.
